Billy Porter commits. Whether the actor is channelling Egyptian sun god Ra in a gold bodysuit and robe at the Met Gala or starring in his Emmy-winning role as Pray Tell on FX’s Pose, Porter gives it his all—and then some. So, naturally, one should not be surprised to hear that he’s just as dedicated to entertaining at home.
But 2020 has obviously been different. “Connecting with people virtually and spending time in the kitchen describes my entire life in quarantine,” Porter tells Glamour. “I love to cook, and this global reset has given me the time to practice my chef skills. I also love a good cocktail here and there.”
That’s why it was a no-brainer for Porter to team up with LG, and specifically its LG InstaView Refrigerator With Craft Ice, which is just as extra, in a good way, as Porter is on a red carpet. “Have you seen this refrigerator?” he asks of the appliance that now has a permanent place in his home. “These Craft Ice spheres are gorgeous, and the refrigerator makes them automatically, so you can toss those rubber molds bye!” Porter also praises the knock-on glass panel. “When I’m like, ‘Do I even have limes?’ I literally just knock on the front and see what’s inside without opening the door.”
Given that Porter doesn’t compromise on going big and bold, we asked him to share his other favorite things with us—from his truly impressive skin-care routine to the tea that soothes his voice. Read on for the latest edition of Your Fave’s Faves!
My signature Texas margarita recipe
I love a good spicy margarita, and a Texas margarita is essential for unwinding. But I’m diabetic, so I don’t do a lot of sugar. If you want to swap out the triple sec for a little agave, that’s my move. My recipe is super easy. Throw it all in a shaker, and boom: Billy’s Craft Ice Texas Margarita!
My favorite cooking appliance
I do a ton of cooking and I love to try new kitchen appliances and hacks. Have you used an air fryer? It’s life-changing. I love the LG Instaview Range With Air Fry. In fact, speaking of LG, there are a few other folks in this campaign who got these chic ovens with that same InstaView knock-on panel, and it has built-in air fry. Like, what? I might have to call them up and place an order for myself.
My must-have gadget during the pandemic
A ring light. I love Sensyne’s LED Circle Lights With Phone Holder. I’ve been doing so many virtual calls, meetings, and interviews, and the ring light just makes everything look better. I highly recommend getting one.
The candles that put me at ease
Once I have my margarita in my hand, I put on some good TV and light one of my favorite Molton Brown candles. I love its orange and bergamot three-wick candle. I have also been loving the beautiful candles from Michael Aram, particularly its Cherry Blossom scent. I get so exhausted by the end of the day—if I’m shooting, I really just want to be able to shut my mind off and relax. And nothing says “unwind” like tequila, TV, and candles.
The skin-care products I swear by
Kiehl’s has been a go-to for so many years—like, at least two decades. I use its Calendula Deep Cleansing Face Wash, Calendula Herbal-Extract Toner, Calendula Petal-Infused Calming Mask, and their Ginger Leaf & Hibiscus Firming Mask. I also use Kiehl’s Ultimate Brushless Shaving Cream, Midnight Recovery Concentrate, Vital Skin-Strengthening Super Serum, and Blue Astringent Herbal Lotion.
And my current name recognition situation has blessed me with giftings from many brands, some of which include: Herbivore’s Orchid Antioxidant Beauty Face Oil, Emerald Deep Moisture Glow Oil, and Lapis Blue Tansy Face Oil; Glossier’s Priming Moisturizer; La Prairie’s Cellular Radiance eye cream and face cream; Kypris’s Antioxidant Dew Facial Serum, and Lord Jones + Tamara Mellon High CBD Formula Stiletto Cream and Body Lotion.
The best loungewear for hanging out at home
I’m in loose clothing, usually Lululemon, Rick Owens, Yohji Yamamoto, Ivy Park, Uniqlo, Champion, Thom Browne…. I love these clothes because they are comfortable. Fashion can often at times be painful, so it’s a nice change.
My best organization tip for your closet
My closet is not as crazy as one may think, but I’m a Virgo, so I need to be organized and California Closets is the best way to do that. They make sure everything has a place, and I need that helping hand. I have way too many jackets and sweaters, so I love to have a lot of hanging room in my closet to make sure I can see everything, so I don’t have to fumble through lots of drawers.
The sweater I’m obsessed with
The Rick Owens cashmere duster/sweater. This is just the ultimate staple in my closet because it makes any look feel complete.
The sentimental fragrance I love
I haven’t really worn fragrance since high school, but I do wear my husband’s sometimes, which is Duro by Nasomatto. It reminds me of him when I put it on. Also, Thom Browne just sent me some new scents that I’m loving!
What I’m currently watching on TV
My go-to shows change with the season, but right now I’m watching Boys in the Band, Ratched, and Hamilton. I absolutely love everything Ryan Murphy does, so I can’t miss any of his new shows. I started in theater, so I’ll watch any musical I can!
My favorite Broadway show tunes
Anything Sondheim. Dreamgirls is one of my favorite shows. Kander and Ebb, Richard Rogers with…anybody. The list is endless. I don’t like these “best of” games. They give me anxiety because there is never just one—for anybody!
What I drink to soothe my voice
Water for hydration is always the best choice. No one is drinking enough water. If I really need the extra help, then Throat Coat Tea also works.
My go-to snack
Cape Cod Kettle-Cooked potato chips! Why not? I feel like it’s the ultimate comfort food.
