For decades now, Snoop Dogg (born Calvin Cordozar Broadus Jr.) has been vocal about his love of plants, with good old Mary Jane always playing center forward.
However, in recent months, the world-famous rapper has been experimenting with other additions to his daily herb-consumption regimen. The D O Double G is now hyped about plant-based foods, as evidenced by his collaborations with Beyond Meat, his attempts to get his family on the diet, and his investment in plant-based snack company, Outstanding Foods.
“With such a busy schedule, I needed to make sure that I’m taking care of myself both mentally and physically,” he said during an exclusive interview. “I needed to change up my diet a bit to help me give me all the nutrients I need to continue to be at the top of my game. Some of my immediate family are vegan and vegetarian so they helped me figure out the best plan with me.”
As one might expect, his interest in cannabis and other plant-based options are intimately connected.
“I’ve always known about the benefits of CBD and THC, long before it became popular. Adding more plant-based foods and veggies into my life only elevated what I already knew,” he explained.
Through his VC fund, Casa Verde Capital, the artist is invested in several cannabis companies including Eaze, Dutchie, Propper, Metrc, Bespoke Financial, Vangst, Leaflink, Greebits, Merry Jane, and Trellis, among others.
The nature of Snoop’s relationship to a long list of brands is very diverse: some, he endorses; others, he invests in.
So, what determines his interest? What makes a brand worthy not only of Uncle Snoop’s endorsement, but also his “green”?
It’s all about the quality of the company’s product and how innovative it is, as well as management and potential returns on investment.
“Most importantly: if it feels good, then I’m all in,” he explained.
In the case of plant-based foods, the love affair started with Beyond Meat, a company that makes meat substitutes. Beyond Meat went public last year in the most successful IPO in almost 20 years.
After partnering with them, his interest quickly spread, leading to his next big investment in Outstanding Foods.
“They’re a great company and I like what they’re about,” he voiced. “They have great leadership, good eats, and healthy choices.
“It’s also important to me to show the next generation about the importance of business and investing for their future,” he added.
As any other avid cannabis consumer, Tha Doggfather is far too familiar with the infamous munchies, that feeling of insatiable hunger that follows the consumption of certain cannabis strains.
When asked about it, Snoop answered enthusiastically: the rapper loves his food almost as much as he loves his weed.
“There’s a lot of things I’m always reaching for [when I get the munchies],” he said. His go-tos: soda, chips and sweets.
“But I like to balance that out with some fresh fruit and veggies,” he continued. “You know, I always have to have the Texas BBQ PigOut Pigless Pork Rinds on deck, ya hear me?”
Finally, Snoop explored the matter of potential collaborations with Martha Stewart, who recently announced she’d be launching a CBD products line with Canopy Growth, a company that also carries the rapper’s brand.
“You know, Martha always has me sharpening my green thumb,” he said, sending a shout out to his sis’.
“I’m always keeping my eye out in the infused food category and what’s comin’ up, but my friends always like chocolates and mint. My cannabis line Leafs by Snoop has them all covered there and I’m always looking for the next perfect recipe… I’ve gots to do it,” he concluded.
